Self-Closing Hinges for Cabinets and Furniture

Self-Closing Hinges for Cabinets and Furniture

Self-closing hinges have an integrated spring that pulls the door in during the final part of the closing movement and keeps it closed. They are suitable for kitchen cabinets, cupboards and furniture where the door should remain closed without a separate catch.

How a self-closing hinge works

As the door approaches the closed position, the hinge spring engages and pulls the door towards the cabinet. The spring then keeps the door closed until it is opened again.

The self-closing action does not slow the movement of the door. If the door should also close gently and in a controlled manner, choose a hinge with integrated soft-close damping instead.

The difference between self-closing and push-to-open

A self-closing hinge pulls the door inwards and keeps it closed. A push-to-open hinge has a reverse-action spring. Pressing the door releases the push catch, after which the hinge pushes the door outwards. These functions are therefore intended for different types of doors and opening methods.

Door position and opening angle

The range includes hinges for full-overlay, half-overlay and inset doors. Models are also available for thick doors, rebated doors and other special applications.

Choose the opening angle according to how the cabinet will be used. Common models open to approximately 94°, 105° or 110°, while wide-angle hinges, such as 155° or 165° models, provide better access to the cabinet interior.

Choosing the correct self-closing hinge

Check the door position, thickness and material together with the hinge cup size, drilling dimensions, opening angle and K dimension. The height and type of mounting plate also affect the final position of the door in relation to the cabinet.

A mounting plate is never included when you purchase a hinge. Choose a mounting plate that is compatible with the hinge series and the required door position.

Frequently asked questions about self-closing hinges

What is a self-closing hinge?

It is a hinge with an integrated spring that pulls the door in during the final part of the closing movement and keeps it closed.

How does the self-closing action work?

As the door approaches the closed position, the hinge spring engages. It pulls the door towards the cabinet and then keeps it closed.

Is self-closing the same as soft-close?

No. A self-closing hinge uses spring force to pull the door closed but does not slow its movement. A soft-close hinge also has a damper that slows the door before it closes.

Can self-closing hinges be used with push-to-open?

Normally not. The two functions work in opposite directions. A handleless push-to-open door requires a push-to-open hinge with a reverse-action spring together with a suitable push catch.

Which door positions are available?

Self-closing hinges are available for full-overlay, half-overlay and inset doors. Always check the door position and required overlay before ordering.

Which opening angle should I choose?

Opening angles of approximately 94°, 105° or 110° are often suitable for standard cabinets. Models with angles such as 155° or 165° provide a wider opening and better access to the cabinet interior.

Can I replace an old hinge with a self-closing hinge?

Yes, provided the new hinge matches the door position, cup size, drilling pattern, drilling depth and door thickness. Also check that it is compatible with the existing or new mounting plate.

Is a mounting plate included with the hinge?

No. A mounting plate is never included when you purchase a hinge. It must be ordered separately and must match both the hinge series and the required door position.
